ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY SHIPPING ship

The Clean Shipping Alliance (CSA) represents a group of leading companies from the commercial shipping and cruise industries that have been leaders in emission control efforts and have made significant investments in research and analysis, funding and committing resources to comply with 2020 fuel requirements through the development and use of Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems (EGCS).

Our Key Principles

  1. Support for science-based regulation: Decisions to restrict EGCS must be grounded in credible risk assessments per IMO guidelines (MEPC.1/Circ.899).
  2. Opposition to outright bans: No scientific evidence currently justifies global or regional bans on EGCS discharges.
  3. Preserve IMO integrity: Avoid measures that undermine IMO’s global role or create fragmented regional rules.
  4. Goal-based proportional approach: If harm is proven, adjust discharge limits rather than impose blanket prohibitions.
  5. Support for GESAMP Task Team: Ensure impartiality and adequate funding to finalize emission factor development method.
  6. Reject proposals bypassing IMO processes: Amendments to MARPOL Annex VI must follow established, IMO, PSSA and UNCLOS procedures.
